Know the Dos and Don'ts: How to Care for Your Air Conditioner

Now that summer is over, you might think you don't need to think about your air conditioner. But, that's not the case. You might be switching to the heating portion of your HVAC system, but it won't stay that way for long. As soon as the temperatures start to rise again, you'll be ready to turn your air conditioner back on. When you do, you'll want to have a maintenance and care plan already in motion. If you're new to air conditioner ownership, you might not know to protect your system. To help you protect your air conditioner once you start using it again next year, here are some dos and don'ts for you to follow.

Do Change Your Filters

When it comes to caring for your air conditioner, the first rule on the maintenance list involves maintaining the filter. You should change the filter at least once every three months. This maintenance tip helps you to protect both your air conditioner and your heater. That's because both systems utilize the same set of ducts and vents. One thing to remember is that the once every three months is a recommendation, rather than a hard-and-fast time frame. It's actually a good idea to check the filter at least once a month. As soon as the surface of the filter is coated with dust, you should replace it with a new one.

Do Schedule Routine Maintenance

Now that you're responsible for the care of your own air conditioner, you want to take steps to extend its life. That's where the routine maintenance comes into the picture. Routine maintenance is the best way to prevent costly malfunctions and to extend the life of your air conditioner. If you contact an HVAC company near you, they can help you to create a calendar for all the maintenance your air conditioner will need throughout the season.

Don't Ignore Warning Signs

If you want to protect your air conditioner, you mustn't ignore the warning signs. Warning signs are a way for your air conditioner to let you know that some problems require immediate attention. Some of the warning signs include strange noises, unusual odors, and increased cooling bills. If you notice any of those signs, you should call for repairs as soon as possible.

Don't Tackle AC Repairs On Your Own

Finally, if you want to avoid serious problems with your air conditioner, never try to tackle major repairs on your own. Trying to handle major repairs can end up doing irreparable harm to your air conditioner. Instead, contact your HVAC contractor to check it out and determine if your air conditioner needs repairs.
